city, northeastern Africa,
capital of Djibouti.
The city is a port on
an inlet of the Gulf
of Aden and is the terminus
of a railroad to Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia. Djibouti
is an important container
shipment and transshipment
point on the shipping
lanes of the Red Sea
and the Suez Canal.
The city's principal
exports are coffee,
hides, and salt. Djibouti
became the capital of
French Somaliland in
1892. Population (1995
estimate) 383,000.
