In 1966, the Vita-Craft
Corporation wanted to
expand its facilities
and the old jail stood
in their way. Several
citizens, after learning
that the original Shawnee
jail, built in 1843,
was to be razed, formed
the Shawnee
Historical Society to
preserve the history
of Shawnee.
Several members of
this group appeared
in Topeka and the Shawnee
Historical Society was
declared a non-profit
organization. Through
their efforts, Shawnee
Town was born.
